Although that would be nice, unfortunately that architecture wouldn't work because the cron job would need to push the data to the desktop applications, which would mean that the desktop application would have to have a server mechanism built in, which would mean that users would have to configure their routers and firewalls to properly setup JLive! Chat, and that would very difficult to near impossible for a lot of non-technical people.

On another note, we are only a week or two away from releasing the new major version of JLive! Chat which has been completely re-designed and re-written to be high performance and very light on resource usage, and also introduces many new powerful features and enhancements.
